Summer tour
Ideal conditions and excellent visibility make this tour rewarding in summer and autumn. The high-altitude hike from Turren to Brienzer Rothorn offers a unique panorama of surrounding peaks, extending as far as the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Below in the valley, the emerald-green waters of Lake Lungern and the turquoise-blue Lake Brienz shimmer in the sunlight.
A lovely mountain trail leads from Turren across flower-filled meadows to Schönbüel. The Engelhörner peaks seem close enough to touch, and the view across the Central Swiss Alps—towards the geographical center of Switzerland or Mount Titlis—is equally impressive. The renovated Berghuis Schönbüel is reached after a 1-hour-30-minute ascent from the Turren mountain station.
From Schönbüel, the hike continues along the ridge towards Brienzer Rothorn, featuring gentle ups and downs. Lake Brienz, Lake Arnisee, and Lake Eisee lie spread out beneath you. In the early morning or in cooler weather, you may even spot chamois and ibex at close range.
Upon reaching Brienzer Rothorn, you are once again rewarded with the region's stunning beauty before enjoying a leisurely ride down to Brienz on the steam-powered Brienz-Rothorn Railway. From there, the Zentralbahn train offers a comfortable hourly connection back to Lungern. Another option for the descent from Rothorn is to take the new aerial cable car to Sörenberg and then a PostBus back to the starting point. Hiking time: approx. 4 hours / 1,050 meters of elevation gain.
The tour can also be hiked in the opposite direction.
